Sorry for not replying sooner, but your guess is as good as mine, haven't a clue about the FAT, I just think that some of the script code isn't compatable with win98, but its needed for the installer to work correctly.
ATX goto the next thread "Mission Voices"' read then download the App I posted and let me know if that works on win98
Thanks

Hi,
I am from Germany too, and I hate to say that I have the same problem too. I owned both the ENGLISH and the GERMAN Version of XWA. Both are not recognized by the TFTC Installer. My PC is running Windows 98 (Language german). Could the german Windows be the problem?
Thanks

It's definitely a Windows 98 issue. I don't think that anyone who's running Windows Me is having this issue so that blows my FAT/NTFS idea out of the water. Actually, I reinstalled TF on my system last week and have been playing it again for fun...almost finished. Sure the graphics are dated but the overall experience is still great!

ATX, any chance it could be a CD-ROM hardware compatibility issue? i.e.- is your CD-ROM drive a plug-an-play device or does it use proprietary real-mode drivers? Could your CD's be scratched or anything like that?...

My CDs are both in good condition. The CD-ROM drives are linked and jumpered as slaves to a harddisk each (1 DVD (Toshiba) and 1 CD-Brenner (TDK)... making CD-R and CD-RW ... sorry I currently dont know the english word). Both use the standard Windows drivers. During my attempts to install TFTC I unplugged one of them to see if the double CD-Drives would be the problem, but without effort.
Thanks

My CD drives don't use REAL MODE unless I'm in Safe Mode or something. I'm running the original TF under Windows without problem so both my XWA and TF CD's work. DS mentioned that it might be a script not looknig in the right spot. Thing is if it isn't the FAT then it may be the Registry since I think that XP and 2000 store their main Windows registry in another key folder as opposed to Win98. Is there anyone running Me that's getting it to install properly?

ATX do you know much about the registry, if so can you go to the XWA entry, it should be under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC\X-Wing Alliance\v1.0
If not Click on Start/Run
A box will pop up type in regeit and click on OK a new window wil open follow the folders as below
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC\X-Wing Alliance\v1.0
Right Click on the V1.0 Folder and click on export, name the file and save to a convenient location (Desktop), go to desktop find the file right click on it again, and click on edit, select all and paste here, so I can see the differences.
A quick Warning Don't mess about with the Registry too much and do not delete anything!!
It should look something like this
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC\X-Wing Alliance\v1.0] "Executable"="C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance\\XWingAlliance.EXE" "Install Path"="C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance" "Source Path"="I:" "CD Path"="I:" "Analyze Path"="I:\\INSTALL\\SysCheck.exe" "Source Dir"="I:\\" "JoystickID"="1" "Version"="2.0" "InstallType"=dword:00000009 "MAGIC"=dword:00094e22 "SoundCard"="TRUE"

Not a problem big guy... REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC\X-Wing Alliance\v1.0] "Executable"="C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance\\XWingAlliance.EXE" "Install Path"="C:\\Program Files\\LucasArts\\XWingAlliance" "Source Path"="D:" "CD Path"="D:" "Analyze Path"="D:\\INSTALL\\SysCheck.exe" "Source Dir"="D:\\" "JoystickID"="1" "SoundCard"="TRUE" "LastPilot"="yoda" "Version"="2.0" "InstallType"=dword:00000009 "Magic"=dword:00094e22 With the exception of the install path, everything's the same except for the lastpilot key...probably meaning I have more than one, which I do. There are other keys under the Windows software key but it sounds like this is the only one your installer points to making it rather obvious that it is indeed some kind of ASPI/VB script compatibility issue. By the way, what VB script are you using? I'm just ran the vbrun60sp5.exe to reupdate mine again but I'm thinking that possibly it's too old. I was going to try that test wav installer again last night but I see you took it down. Is there a newer version for older OS if that is indeed the issue? BTW, my wife caught me dipping into the account for XP..I am thus grounded from touching my..errr..her money....that I worked for

ATX, Ok I've had another go at getting this to work, if you can test this for me I would be grateful
It will not install anything, all it does if this works, is to detect, each disk then continue to the next disk.
It should ask for
1. XWA Disk 1 2. XWA Disk 2 3. TIE Fighter Disk (depending on which you selected) 4. XWA Disk 1
If this works let me know, and I'll make up another version that copy's the files across.

Ok the last test worked with windows 98 thanks to ATX This next test, it will ask you exactly the same thing 1. XWA Disk 1 2. XWA Disk 2 3. TIE Fighter Disk (depending on which you selected) 4. XWA Disk 1 But now when it has finished, take a look in your XWA DIR C:\Program Files\LucasArts\XWingAlliance (By Default) You will should see two new Folders, respective of each disk that has installed wave files. 1. WaveXWA and 2. WaveTIECD or WaveTIE95 depending on which version of the Tie Fighter disk you have. If you look in each of these folder you should see the wave files and other folders, check each folder, they should be full of wave files. If so it worked. Remember this is only a test, all wave files will be included in the correct XWA wave folders once this thing works right You can uninstall this test by clicking on the desktop icon named "Uninstall WCT" Thanks for your paticipation
