Couldn't you just rename some imperial craft opts to Y-wing.opt and x-wing.opt, and rename the ywing and xwing to something else which could be called up in every mission? Hmm, wait, does that qualify for extensive editing?

We wanted to do that...but it would call for a revamp of every mission...

I wonder if you could park a larger model overtop of it. Say some assualt transport or something. I've seen some interesting clipping moments in the game and don't think there'd be any adverse side effects.
