Hi there,
Please forgive any dumb questions but I'm new here. It seems I too have run into the game crashes, albeit much earlier than anyone else. Can't seem to get through the first TIE Bomber mission (B1M3.tie) because as soon as the last of the heavy lifters have been destroyed, and only 20% or so of the mission objective remains, the game crashes back to the desktop, with the infamous message box stating that you can send and "error report." It is a pity, because you have done an astounding job at reproducing perhaps the best space simulator ever. I wonder, has anyone else run into this crash, early on? Or is it only the gunboat levels that people are having difficulties with?
I use a Dell XPS M170 laptop, with 2.13 Ghz, and have a more than adequate graphics card (256 meg)
I use Windows XP
X-Wing Alliance is version 2.02 English language
It is the TIE95 cd

The error report is just a standard windows O/S event that is sent to MS when any program ends abnormally.
Sounds like there maybe a bad condition string (goal) within the mission file that is causing the game to lockup. i.e.-- two or more or impossible conditions (goal strings) conflicting....
There might be an issue too where maybe your .opt files are not in synch with the correct .dat, .lst (text) files which can freak out the game engine. Probably best to do a clean install etc. of XWA.
